Frequently Asked Questions
1. Why should I give to the United Way of Northern New Mexico?
It is the best way
to give- the most efficient way to give. More of your money (about 90 cents of every
dollar) goes directly to programs and community services provided by the 18 member
agencies supported by the United Way. By raising money with the United Way of Northern
New Mexico, agencies spend less time fund-raising, which means they can concentrate
on what they do best supporting our communities. In addition, we have been able
to provide grants to other non-profits in our service area, identified by a thorough
volunteer process to assess need and effectiveness of their programs.
2. How do I know that my dollars are wisely spent?
When you give to the United Way
of Northern New Mexico, you entrust your hard-earned dollars to a local organization
that takes this trust very seriously. The organization is committed to the highest
standards of fiscal responsibility. United Way volunteers oversee allocations to
all local programs, conduct annual on-site visits and closely monitor agency services.
United Way of Northern New Mexico operating expenses and records are audited by
an independent auditing firm and carefully scrutinized by budget volunteers to protect
this trust.
3. What are your administrative costs?
Total fundraising, year-round administrative and programmatic costs are based each year on the figures taken from our IRS Form 990.
4. How do the administrative costs of the
other United Ways compare with those of the United Way of Northern New Mexico?
There
are some variations in how United Ways around the country calculate their administrative
costs. The United Way of Northern New Mexico has very low administrative costs as
compared to other United Ways of similar size in the state and nationwide. We strongly
rely on volunteer participation, and we believe in having a small professional staff
managing the day-to-day activities of the organization.
