Resources for teachers and students interested in life aboard a scientific research vessel

Katie Tauxe has two classroom presentations:

You are welcome to download these presentations and order the video to use in your classroom. For schools in Northern New Mexico, Katie is available for classroom presentations.

[.]  The educational video: Out to Sea: Life as a Crew Member Aboard a Geological Research Ship

[Out to Sea Banner] This video introduces students to the interesting life on board a scientific research ship. In the video, members of the crew discuss their life on board and tell about some of the fascinating and thought-provoking scientific discoveries made on board the Drilling Vessel JOIDES Resolution.

The running time for this video is about 19 minutes.

For more information or to request a copy of the video (in VHS or DVD format) email Katie Tauxe

Download OutToSeaGuide.pdf, a teacher's guide accompanying the video. Print it on both sides of a sheet of paper, and fold into quarters to fit in the VHS dust jacket.

[.]  A slide presentation focusing on careers aboard scientific research vessels

[Seagoing Careers Presentation] This slide presentation introduces students to the many varied careers on research vessels. A research vessel requires many different jobs to keep the ship operating self-sufficiently. Seagoing careers are an excellent opportunity to travel the world and experience the excitement of scientific discovery. This presentation emphasizes that being a ship's mate, machinist, photographer, editor or laboratory technician is just as important to the scientific mission as the biologist, chemist and geologist.
