Van
Ride Cancellations
The BESC transportation
department tries to accommodate all seniors
who need van rides. Several times in the last month the van has arrived
to find no one at home to take the ride, or in other cases the person
who made the reservation has changed his or her mind. The BESC charges
$2.00 per ride or $1.50 per ride on a 10-ride ticket. The real cost of
each ride is over $10.00. The cost discrepancy is reimbursed to the
BESC by the National Agency on Aging, a federal agency supported by
taxes, and by the State of New Mexico. When a van is dispatched to pick
up a patron who doesn't use the service, everybody loses. Please call
662-8922 to cancel your ride reservation if you have a change of plans.
Call as soon as possible after 8:00 a.m.
Day Trip Planning
Information
Taking day trips is always a fun
thing for anyone who wants to
participate. We need your input. All of these trips take planning,
advertising and cooperation with the director and the transportation
department. The time needed to make these events happen may be counted
as volunteer hours through RSVP.
In order to continue the day
trips, volunteers are needed to make
them work. It is suggested that one or two people take one month and be
responsible for the following:
Choose a month, one month a
year, to do this planning Be the host or
hostess for
the event. Make sure the information
for the event is submitted to the
office in time for the newsletter. This is one month prior to
publication of the newsletter in which the information is to be
published. Put a notice or poster on
the bulletin boards, in the travel
section, at BESC and WRSC. Advise the travel
department
and complete the forms required for
the event. Forms are available in the travel office. The director must
approve this form. It tells what the event is, where it takes place,
when it takes place, who is hosting the event, what the costs are.
If the event has admission
fees, check with the sponsoring group
to make sure of the admission price at least five weeks before the
event. Advise the sponsor as soon as you can of the number of seniors
who plan to attend. If the event requires payment for tickets in
advance, work with the director for advance funding.
If the event involves a meal
in a restaurant, make reservations
and find out if individual checks are issued.
Sometimes not enough seniors sign up for an event to make it
feasible
to run the van. This is not a reflection on the planners, but simply
shows what trips seniors want to take.
This program sounds like a lot
of work, but it can be done in two or
three hours. Van trips are senior events and should be managed by
seniors. If you are interested in this planning, call Louise at the
RSVP office, 662-8923.
Trip and Travel
Information
There will be pickups at both
the White Rock Center and Betty
Ehart Center for all out-of- county trips.
The trips planned for the
enjoyment of all seniors are structured
for different levels of physical exertion and a variety of events.
Rules of the road:
- There must be at least six
people signed up for most events in
order to use a county van. The number may be set at a higher level if
the 15 passenger van is the only one available.
-
Sign up for the event the
moment you hear about it.
- Invite friends to
join you.
- Recreational trip charges
will be based on "full-cost" recovery.
- Monday
through Friday
transportation takes priority over
recreational trips.
- The Director of Senior
Services reserves the right to cancel
trips if there are justifiable reasons for doing so.
-
Trips may be cancelled
because of unfavorable weather
conditions.
- Please share your ideas for
senior trips with Pauline Schneider
(662-8920)
- Notice of trips will be
posted at both Centers and will be
listed in Retired and Senior News.
Full-cost recovery charges for recreational trips include
the costs of
operating of the vehicle, the payment of the driver's salary and
travel-related expenses including but not limited to meals, lodging and
admissions. For overnight trips, an effort is made to make the cost as
reasonable as possible.
