" Next Guild Meeting "

Tuesday September 28th, 2020 7pm - Location: TBD

Suzi Parron, speaker and quilt barn artist

Suzi’s lecture will include over one hundred stunning photographs of barn quilts across the nation. “My talk will take you on a journey along the quilt trail, beginning with the very first barn quilt, which stemmed from Donna Sue Groves and her wish to honor her mother's quilting art.” For more information, please visit: http://www.barnquiltinfo.com/suzi.htm

Future Plans - We continue to adjust plans as we wait for the day that we can hold Piecemaker’s meetings again. Jenny Kae and Michelle Watts have rescheduled their visits to 2022. Debbie Maddy and Susie Parron are still scheduled for later this year. We’re hopeful that once we’re able to be vaccinated and the churches open for groups again, WE WILL HAVE MEETINGS AGAIN! Until then, keep quilting and stay safe!

2021 Star Gazing Exchange

Last month when I exchanged boxes for the Star Exchange, I really enjoyed opening each box and seeing the beautiful stars our members created to start their box of stars. (It will be my “transportation fee” to take a peek at everyone’s stars as I move boxes between houses.) We’ll be having another exchange on February 23rd. I hope everyone is enjoying the challenge of working with other member’s choices of fabric and guidelines. This is an open exchange, so if anyone else would like to join, please contact me. (melodie.gustavsen@gmail.com)

Piecemaker's is having a block exchange this year. The Star Gazer's Exchange is starting this week (January) with 12 members who will be making a star block each month. This group is open to anyone who wants to join. If you join later in the year, you'll just have less completed blocks by the end of the exchange in November. Until we can meet in person, I'll be moving the boxes between houses. If you'd like more information or to join, please email me. Melodie.gustavsen@gmail.com

Thanks! Melodie

2020 Community Service Challenge

Are you ready for another challenge?? Flo, Melodie and I thought it would be a good way to keep members of the guild connected and at the same time contribute to our Community Service quilt stash.

1. Each completed quilt will earn a $10 gift certificate from Atomic City Quilts. A) $5 to the person who completes the piecing and binding B) $5 for the person who does the quilting. If the quilter charges for the quilting, the person who pays for the quilting would get the $5.

2. The first 25 quilts would get prizes (25 * $10 = $250). Prizes are limited to $20 per person.

3. Each $5 gift certificate you earn entitles you to one entry for the Grand Prize.

4. You can continue to earn an entry for the Grand Prize after the $20 limit for each part that you complete (piecing and binding and/or quilting).

5. Please place your quilt in a bag. Include the name of the individuals who worked on the quilt and note if the quilt has been washed upon completion. Thank you! (*See Newsletter for Label)

6. Flo will distribute the gift certificates when you turn in the completed quilt.

7. Deadline: October 27, 2020

8. Los Alamos Drop off – Atomic City Quilts. Place the quilt in a bag labeled – “LAP Community Service Project” (*Shelley also collects quilts for Project Linus) Include the name(s) of the individual(s) who earned each $5 gift certificate. Also, note if the quilt has been washed upon completion. (*See Newsletter for Label)

Grand Prize: $50 Gift Certificate from Atomic City Quilts – Winner to be announced in October. If you don't have any previous community service projects hiding in your closet - Congratulations! You can get a new race track kit from Melodie. (Jo Ann Painter prepared these kits for us). We also have directions that you could use with your own fabric (Contact us for directions). Or you can create any pattern you choose with your own fabric. Melodie and I are also willing to help deliver kits or pick up finished quilts, as needed.

2017 Upcoming Workshops

Saturday October 28th, 2017 Time TBD Location - White Rock Presbyterian Church

Trapunto is an Italian word meaning stuffed. Traditionally, this was accomplished by stuffing extra batting material into a piece after it was quilted.

This workshop will explore machine trapunto techniques to add a dimensional element to traditional quilts, wall-hangings or art quilts. With innovations such as wash-out thread machine trapunto is easy and creates dramatic effects.

Saturday September 16th, 2017 Time TBD Location - White Rock Presbyterian Church

" Thread Painting "

Pick a pre-printed panel and have fun with threadpainting and embellishing. We will threadpaint parts of the panel to provide emphasis, definition and depth. We will not cover the entire panel with thread. This technique adds a richness and uniqueness to a printed piece of fabric. No threadpainting or free-motion quilting experience necessary.

This technique works really well on panels with birds, flowers, animals, fairies, fruit, and cartoon dinosaurs. OK, basically any panel will be more vibrant, rich and interesting when you are done.

Follow up the treadpainting with the Trapunto Workshop and add more dimension to your panel. Participants do not have to take both workshops, they can be independently.

Tuesday February 28th, 2017 9am - 3pm Location - United Church in Los Alamos.

" Techniques for Raw-Edged Applique "

Techniques for Raw-Edged Applique Workshop presented by Shannon Brinkley, author of "Scrappy Bits Applique." Cost - $50 (members) $60 (non-members) If you are interested, please e-mail Sharon Kapple ( skapple@cybermesa.com) or sign up at the January Guild meeting.

Our class size is limited to a maximum of 10 participants to be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Anyone interested can sign up at the February Guild meeting, or send me (Sharon Kapple) an email at skapple@cybermesa.com.

Wednesday March 25th - 9am - 3pm United Church in Los Alamos.

" All About Evolon "

Evolon is a new non woven material that is taking the mixed media art world by storm. Soft, smooth and white, with a slightly sueded surface, it can be painted, cut, stamped and stitched through. Best yet, it doesn't ravel, so applique can be done neatly without any tedious edge turning.

This one-day class will cover the basics of obtaining and using the material. We will paint it, fuse it, and explore using marker and watercolor pencils as well. A short slide show featuring the many pieces I have made using this material will be included, and sample quilts will be available in class for up- close discussion. Included in the class will be: sample size piece of Evolon, paints, watercolor pencils and markers.

Please contact me (Laura Erickson - rmllerickson@msn.com) to sign up for the class and receive the supply list (no sewing machines needed)!

The UFO Challenge will stay open through our March meeting, so any projects that are currently UFO's will still be eligible!

LAP needs $40.00 for the workshop and if you are purchasing a kit ($35.00) and or ruler (2" $23.95 that goes with kit) or 3" (18.95 and bring your own fabric) that will be a separate check. Deb also wants to remind you that workshop participants need to select and bring your own back round fabric either dark or light. If you are choosing the 2" ruler you need 1 1/2 yards and if you want your stars to match your back round you will need 2 yards. If you are using the 3" ruler you need 2 yards back round and 2 1/2 yards to include the stars. If you want to prep before the workshop go to CreativeCurves.com and under categories find "instructional videos"-click on this link and watch Virginia using her ruler and making a curved block. I've watched it 3X and can't wait for this workshop.
