The Los Alamos Heart Council (LAHC), a United Way Agency, was formed in August of 1984 to promote heart-health and wellness in our communities of Los Alamos and Northern New Mexico.

Our mission is to develop, implement and support community-wide programs in Los Alamos and Northern New Mexico focusing on the prevention of heart disease by encouraging heart-healthy lifestyles through wellness awareness, health/fitness/nutrition education and community partnerships.

Los Alamos Heart Council's programs include:

  1. Sponsoring the annual Los Alamos Heart Council Health Fair, held in the fall of each year since 1986.
  2. Support of local area nurses and allied health personnel for continuing education programs in cardiac care.
  3. Education of the public through programs dealing with prevention and treatment of heart and heart-related diseases.
  4. Supporting health related education in schools.
  5. Participating in the annual school Science Fair, giving out awards for health-related projects.
  6. Support for walking clubs in the elementary schools.
  7. Promote the availability of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) in the community by means of education and the purchase and placement of AEDs in Los Alamos and Northern New Mexico.
  8. Annual donation to Los Alamos and Rio Arriba County public libraries to support the purchase of heart health related materials.
(Our last donation was to the Los Alamos Public Library System in 2007.)

The Los Alamos Heart Council receives funds as a member of the United Way and also accepts contributions and memorials.

The volunteer Board of Director members meet monthly on the first Wednesday evening of every month. If you are interested in serving on the Board, please call 661-9101.
