The hike to the Reass cabin was short, but very brutal. It was around a mile, but we
were bushwacking 800 ft up in elevation with heavy packs. The weather was warm and
the snow slushy. It took almost two hours to make the hike. At the Reass cabin we
found the snow was over 3' deep in places an inch in others. after eating MREs we
attempted to build fires and put up tents and built snow caves. However for the
snowcaves we had to gather the snow from a wide area. The snow caves were pretty
much just a cicle of walls with a tarp as a roof. Two different ways of making this type
of shelter were demonstrated. One was rolling snowballs and stacking them up against
each other. The other was just piling up the snow in walls. Also two different doors
were seen, the first was a gap in the wall that went all the way up to the tarp/roof. The
other was a hole cut in the wall leaving an area near the top of the wall intact. Inside
these snow caves, it was very warm. Bob R guessed the temperature inside the
snow caves was at least 3F higher than the outside tempurature during the night. One
group was successful in building a fire and used it to cook on. It was a popular spot as
it generated a lot of heat. By the time it burned out the pit in the snow was about 3'
deep and 6' circular.
In the morning before setting out there was a huge game of capture the flag with
two flags per team instead of one. Two pairs of ski poles were used as flags because
we didn't have anything else to use. Also the snow caves were used as snow forts and
housed them. Another change was you could tag people out using snow balls. One
team took the top of the hill and the other took the bottom. The slope between was a
no-man's land and anybody could be attacked there. The game finished with neither
side winning but the patrol at the top of the hill ending up with more prisoners although
the team at the bottom stole one of the top team's flags. We decided to head out down
the road and sent some of the people who were better at snow shoeing to get the cars.
The snow was icy and gone in patches Mr. Robey took off his skis because he kept
falling and was unable to stop while on the road. The group walking got to the meeting
point a few seconds before the people driving the cars. There was time for a little bit of
lunch while we waited for the last car to get there but not very much. It started snowing
immeadiately after we left! We stopped at the Pecos DQ on the way out to have
another lunch. Afterwards we had an uneventful drive home.
