Orienteering Meet

There will be an Orienteering Meet on Saturday, Sept. 22, 2007 at the Pajarito Trailhead in Rendia Canyon ( on the way to the gun club). This meet will focus on introducing newcomers to the sport, and the New Mexico Orienteers (with help from Girl Scout Troop 123) will offer White (beginner), Yellow (advanced beginner), and Orange (intermediate) courses plus a string course for younger kids (preschool through 2nd grade). This can be either a family or pack/den/patrol/troop event. Boys are encouraged to go orienteering in groups of 2 to 3 or with their families. Cub Scouts in pairs or trios will want to have an adult shadow.

The Orienteering Meet will run from 10 AM to 2 PM, with starting times allowed between 10 AM to 12:30 PM. There will be refreshments and giveaways. New orienteers comfortable with navigating in the woods at a walking pace take ~30-45 minutes to complete the White course. A trio of Webelos new to orienteering may take up to two hours to complete the White course.

The string course is free. The fee for Scouts (with uniform shirt or pack/troop t-shirt) is $3 with at least two participants on a Map for the White and Yellow courses. The fee for the Orange course, for those that have successfully completed a Yellow course or two, will be $6.

Participants will need: uniform shirt, filled water bottle, long pants, shoes for walking in the mountains, a compass if you have one, and weather appropriate outer wear.
