Community Service/Volunteer Opportunities

Thunder Ridge Refuge

We have a wildlife refuge / outdoor classroom in the Jemez Mountains and we are looking for volunteers for many of our projects. The refuge is called Thunder Ridge Refuge (pdf) which is a non-profit org. It is also on a very historic piece of property. Some of the projects we have are:
1) historic Cabin restoration
2) hiking trail building
3) trail maintenance
4) forest thinning
5) riparian area restoration
6) fence building and maintenance
7) pond clean up
8) stream bed erosion prevention
9) gate building
10) New Cabin building
11) road maintenance
Also we would love to extend an invitation to scout troops to contact us for opportunities to come and enjoy this 106 acre wilderness and provide an area for scouts to work on merit badges, hike, explore, and enjoy. Please feel free to contact us at: sprueitt@losalamos.com or 505-662-2749

VolunteerMatch

VolunteerMatch is a national organization whose purpose is to link nonprofits with volunteers. Los Alamos National Laboratory's partnership with VolunteerMatch presents many opportunities for the Northern New Mexico District of BSA.

County/Forest Cleanup

Los Alamos County and the Forest Service are looking for assistance with cleanup in various locations. Contact Wayne Byers, Los Alamos Police Department for details.

Helping Seniors

The Senior Center in Los Alamos has a new volunteer coordinator, Suzanna Woodard. She apparently has been quite involved with the scouting program in the past and would like to contact Scouts who might be interested in helping Seniors with snow shoveling, when and if we ever get any snow. If you would like to help, you can contact Suzanna at 662-8923.
