BASIC TRAINING
Step 1: Boy Scout Leader Fast Start - an introduction to being a leader in Boy Scouts;
available on the web.
Step 2: New Leader Essentials (NLE) - a 90-minute course for all new leaders (Cub Scout,
Boy Scout, Varsity and Venturing) and
interested adults. It is an overview of the entire BSA program; focuses on the aims,
ideals and methods used in each of the parts of the BSA program; and emphasizes the
progression from one part of the program to the next. New Leader Essentials is best taken
before Leader Specific Training.
Step 3: Scoutmaster Leader Specific Training - one 9-hr day or three 3-hour evening,
class-room sessions. The all-day version is offered each year in October and the three-evening version is offered
locally in the spring depending on interest. This year the Scoutmaster Leader Specific
training is scheduled for Oct. 20, 2007.
Step 4: Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS) - a camping experience that
is intended to take new leaders through the outdoor requirements the boys must complete for
advancement through First Class. It starts on a Friday evening and runs until Sunday
afternoon, and is usually held in April at Camp Rand. This is "hands on"
training - leaders will do the same activities that the boys are expected
to do. This year's IOLS is scheduled for April 18-20, 2008.
This completes "Basic Training" for those that are Scoutmasters or
Assistant Scoutmasters, or those that are just interested in helping. All
leaders should take Youth Protection Training.
After completion of basic training, leaders are strongly encouraged
to take Wood Badge training which is usually one weekend in August and one in September.
In 2007 they will be held August 23-25 and September 7-9 at Camp Frank
Rand. You must attend both weekends.
OTHER TRAINING
Safe Swim Defense and Safety Afloat training (pdf) document should be used
as a reference for BSA aquatics by an "approved" trainer (contact Jennifer Kennedy
for a list of trainers). It is partially extracted from the "Guide to Safe Scouting"
which is also available online at the GSWC website. This information needs to
be covered when conducting unit-level training for these two courses (usually in a combined class).
Troop Committee Challenge training - this is now available as
on-line training. To use the National online training site, you must create a user account; you will need the
Personal ID number from your registration card.
For more training information, please look at the NNM Training Calendar or contact Pippa Freyer, NNM Training Chairman.
